Atlanta Journal-Constitution Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000 D7 OBITUARIES Rex Nelon, gospel music bass singer By Kay Powell Gospel music pioneer Rex Nelon, 68, who sang bass for some of gospel's top groups, including the Nelons and the LeFevres, died of a heart attack Sunday in London. Mr. Nelon, who moved from Smyrna to Nashville in March, had been traveling with the Gaither Homecoming Friends tour in Ireland. Nelon Funeral plans will be announced by Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, Tenn.
"He probably was one of the most talented bass singers in Southern gospel music," said Danny Odum, minister of music at Calvary Baptist Church of Lilburn. What set Mr. Nelon apart from other gospel bass singers, added Mr. Odum, was "his range, as far as being able to get down to some very low bass notes. "He was a great bass, but he looked at his role to complement the group, not to receive attention." He began his career in 1955 with the Homeland Harmony Quartet before spending 20 years with Gospel Music Hall of Fame group the LeFevres.
That group eventually became the Nelons after he bought it in the 1970s and today includes his daughter, Kelly Nelon of Marietta. Mr. Nelon had cut back his schedule and no longer toured with the Nelons. But he made occasional appearances with them. He traveled with Bill Gaither's Homecoming Friends and can be seen on their videos singing with Vestal Goodman as tenor, Jake Hess as lead and Ben Speer singing baritone.
A statement Monday from the Nashville-based Gospel Music Association called Mr. Nelon "one of the most respected men in Southern gospel music." He was a leader in gospel music publishing, owning LeFevre-Sing Music, Rex Nelon Music, Stoker Music and other song catalogs. He had owned Rex Nelon Singers Music, now closed, on Windy Hill Road in Smyrna. In March, Mr. Nelon married Judy Spencer Nelon, a Nashville music publisher, and moved from Smyrna.
Recalling his early days as a gospel singer living in Atlanta, Mr. Nelon said money was scarce. "I could go down to this restaurant called the Pickrick, and the owner would let me eat, and I paid him when I worked," he said in a May 1995 interview in Singing News Magazine. Former Gov. Lester Maddox, owner of the Pickrick, remained a fan of Mr.
Nelon. Mr. Nelon performed at area churches and events for nearly 45 years. "He could sing that bass very, very smoothly," said Steve Cruce of Lilburn, who is in charge of special events for Calvary Baptist. "He's always been a perfect gentleman and such a nice person when you meet him.
He always had time for you." Mr. Nelon was inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 1998 with the LeFevres. He was voted favorite bass singer by Singing News Awards in 1980 and 1982. Mr. Nelon received five Dove Awards and three Grammy nominations and appeared on the "Grand Ole Opry," "Music City Tonight" and the "700 Club." He served on the board of directors for the National Quartet Convention and was a trustee of the board of the Gospel Music Trust Fund.
"I never wanted to be anything else other than a gospel singer. I never tried very much else, and what I did try, I wasn't very good at," Mr. Nelon told Singing News. "I'm not very good at this, but I'm happy." Surviving in addition to his wife and daughter are a son, Todd Nelon of Powder Springs; his mother, Marietta Nelon of Asheville, N.C.; a sister, Judy Hyer of Asheville; and five grandchildren. WEST MR. WARREN WADE WEST Age 77, of Stone Mountain, died January 24, 2000 at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Decatur, GA. Born in Wellsboro, September 18, 1922, he was the eldest son of Harold Jacob West and Bertha Short West. In high school in Endicott, N.Y., he was a member of the wrestling team and won all-state band honors for playing the french horn. He graduated in 1938 at the age of 15, and completed additional classes in order to be old enough to begin studying animal husbandry at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., since he planned to be a more scientific farmer.
His schooling was interrupted by the advent of WW I1, and upon induction into army, he was sent to Georgia Tech for additional engineering courses, prior to being sent to France, Austria, and Germany as a radio operator. He returned to Cornell after the war, and completed his degree in 1948, working at farms in several locations such as Wellsboro and Red Hook, N.Y. In 1952, he and his family moved to South Carolina, and he changed professions, becoming a metallurgist at the Fabrications Laboratory of the Savannah River Plant in Aiken. Because of the high level of secrecy surrounding the nature of the weapons-grade plutonium production at SRP in its initial years, it was not until his older daughter went on a high school science club sponsored trip through part of the plant in 1964 and the plant manager proudly pointed out that Mr. West held several patents for testing the tensile strength of reactor core rods, that his family had any idea about the nature of his job and his accomplishments! For many years, Warren carpooled from Aiken Estates to SRP with two friends, Bill Carroll and Paul Chismar.
They shared a love of bowling and fishing, and together, they renovated a boat that they named "The PEG" using the first letters of their wives' names. Since Warren had become bald at an early age, his friends nicknamed him "Minnie He was transferred to New Jersey in 1966, and worked in Dupont's industrial diamonds production plant in Gibbstown. After retiring from Dupont in the early 1970's he worked briefly in real estate, moving to Atlanta in 1979. He also worked for Gran Quartz Granite and Marble and Cushman and Wakefield, before permanently retiring. Warren was a Life Master in duplicate bridge and enjoyed playing at the Fermetta Club in Aiken, SC; in New Jersey, and later in various locations around Atlanta.
He also enjoyed photography, gardening, and crossword puzzies. Later in life, in addition to being an avid Braves fan, he became an enthusiastic backyard bird watcher, enjoying a variety of birds attracted to his feeder. In Memoriam FANNING CHARLES W. FANNING JANUARY 24, 1997 I cannot say and I will not say that he is dead, he is just away. With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand, he has wandered into an unknown land, and left us dreaming how very fair it needs must be since he lingers there. And you you, who the wildest yearn for the old time step and the glad return, think of him as faring on, as dear in the love of there as the love of here. Think of him still as the same, say: He is not dead, he is just away.
